The short protocol is the most common IVF treatment at Klinikk Hausken. Hormonal stimulation begins at the start of the menstrual cycle, with no pre-treatment phase required. Most international patients complete their time in Norway in 10–14 days.
For international patients, your journey is coordinated by our team from the start. Klinikk Hausken manages your medication protocol, monitoring schedule, and treatment plan — your home GP does not need to be involved in the treatment itself. Any initial blood tests needed to confirm eligibility are arranged before your consultation with Dr. Hausken. Once treatment begins, you self-administer stimulation injections at home. You only travel to Norway for your monitoring scans, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer.
Your dedicated care team, Camilla (coordinator), your nurse, and Dr. Hausken, will plan every step with you in advance so your time in Norway is focused and stress-free.
Your journey starts with a free case review — a short series of calls with our international coordinator and Dr. Hausken to confirm your eligibility, discuss your options, and plan your treatment. Your nurse will then guide you through the practical steps from there.
Before your consultation with Dr. Hausken, Camilla will ask you to arrange any initial blood tests needed to confirm you are eligible for treatment. These can usually be done with your own GP at home. Camilla will tell you exactly which tests are needed based on your situation — typically hormone levels (AMH, FSH, LH) and an antral follicle count ultrasound.
Your nurse will prescribe your stimulation medications and protocol. If you are based in the UK, you can order from Fertility2u (our UK partner pharmacy) and have them delivered to your home before you travel. If you are based in the US or elsewhere, medications are sent directly to your address. Your nurse will walk you through the injection protocol in detail — what to inject, when, and how.
Hormonal stimulation begins on day 1 of your menstrual cycle. From approximately day 6, you also take a daily injection to prevent premature ovulation. Your nurse is available by message throughout this phase. Travel to Norway is typically scheduled between day 8 and day 10 of stimulation.
Norwegian law requires HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Rubella blood tests to be completed at a Norwegian-approved laboratory — these must be retaken in Norway even if you have had them done at home. At our Haugesund clinic these are covered at no extra cost. At our Oslo, Bergen, and Stavanger clinics, patients are referred to Furst laboratory and will need to pay for these tests separately. We will tell you which clinic you are attending and what to expect before you travel.
Your doctor performs an ultrasound to assess follicle development. Based on the scan results, your medications may need to be adjusted. Additional monitoring may be required before the trigger shot timing and egg retrieval date (OPU day) can be confirmed.
Egg retrieval takes place once follicle development is confirmed ready. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia or sedation (Klinikk Hausken is the first clinic in Norway to offer full anaesthesia for egg retrieval if preferred). The eggs are collected and placed in a petri dish. Sperm is processed at the same time. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.
After fertilisation, we monitor embryo development using a digital incubator (Embryoscope, Eeva, or Geri). On day 1, your nurse will call you with an update on fertilisation results. Development continues for 2–5 days before transfer.
The embryo that shows the most promising development is selected for transfer. The procedure is straightforward and takes a few minutes. If additional good-quality embryos are available, they can be frozen for future cycles — a frozen embryo transfer requires a much shorter return visit.
15 days after egg retrieval, you take a standard pregnancy test at home and contact your nurse with the result. Your nurse will follow up regardless of the outcome and coordinate with your local doctor if needed.

Our free 3-step case review gives you personalized answers from Norwegian fertility specialists, with no obligation to proceed.
Researching IVF abroad raises more questions than answers. What will treatment cost? Can the clinic help? How does it all work? Instead of guessing, get a clear picture in one week: a fertility specialist reviews your case, explains your options, and tells you exactly what we can, and can't, do for you.
Camilla V. Dibley, our international coordinator, calls you at your booked time. She'll learn about your situation, answer practical questions, and brief Dr. Hausken so he's fully prepared. You'll also schedule your online consultation together.
Fully briefed on your background, board-certified fertility specialist Dr. Jon Hausken explores your situation with you. He reviews your medical history, discusses your IVF or fertility options, and outlines what treatment could look like. You'll receive a booking link for your nurse appointment.
Based on Dr. Hausken's assessment, nurses Daniela Portale Halleraker or Kine Ølund Nereng explain what treatment would look like for your specific situation, including costs, timeline, and exactly what's involved. They answer every question until you have complete clarity, whether you move forward or not. Additional time with Dr. Hausken is available if needed.
