What is abdominal pain?

Many women struggle with abdominal pain. What we usually call abdominal pain is a pain in the lower abdomen or genitals. It is common to divide the type of pain into chronic or acute pain. The pain may be related to the menstrual cycle, or it may be constant.

What symptoms are common?

Abdominal pain in women of all ages is common and can lead to poorer quality of life. Many people consult a doctor and gynaecologist due to abdominal pain.

Common causes of abdominal pain:

  • Pain during ovulation (Mittelschmerz)
  • Infections (Chlamydia, Mycoplasma)
  • Endometriosis (mucous cells that have entered the abdominal cavity ovaries or other organs in the pelvis)
  • Muscle knots (Myomer)
  • Cysts
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Diseases of the bladder or intestines

How to treat abdominal pain?

The gynaecologist will do a gynaecological examination. We can use ultrasound, and we can take samples that will clarify the cause. Treatment options can be hormone treatment, antibiotic treatment or surgery (most often keyhole surgery).
